How To Set Personal Goals That You Can Meet

Updated on January 1, 2012

Think About Your Goals First

Don't drive yourself crazy

Don't be unrealistic

Keep it to simple.

Keep your goal map where you can see it daily.

The Secret

I found taking a walk to clear your mind away from kids and anything at home will help you to figure out 5 simple goals. Do whatever will free your thoughts.

Making Your Personal Goal Map

Repurpose a cereal box. Trim it to the size of a standard 8 /12 x 11 sheet of paper.

Materials Needed

Most of us have card board laying around somewhere. Take an empty cereal box and cut it apart leaving just the front or rear panel. Repurposing is a great way to be green too! Why spend any money if you don't have to. Some also refer to this as a treasure map.

1. Cereal box, cut and keep 8 1/2 in. by 11 in, front or rear panel

2. Glue stick, Rubber cement

3. Scissors

4. The Secret

5. One sticky note

Total time to make map: 15 minutes. (What takes longer is knowing what goals to jot down.)

Some people might want a poster- size board to hang -up. In my opinion, I like smaller because I do not necessarily want my friends, kids and neighbors and maybe family to see what my goal sheet is. It is for me personally.

Once you have an idea of your goals. Jot them down on the paper and glue it to the board. The board makes it sturdier. Then jot down dates you want your goals completed by.

My Version of a Personal Goal Map

I like things that are simple, easy, stupid because I don't have time to search out magazine pics. I jot down some words that will jog my memory. I have a sample for you. I set it by my computer so that I can see it everyday. I am visual. The mere sight of this board and book will automatically remind me of my goals. On a sticky note, jot down the dates you will complete your goals. Then, stick it inside the book. Check it from time to time, see how close or far you are from your goal completion date. You will be so excited when you reach each goal! Keep a mental note of what helped you get to your goal sooner than later.

Last year I completed 3 out of 5 goals. I know if I did not have the map, I would not have met any of the 5 goals. Now, if you complete all your goals, add several more goals, By the end of the year I think you should be proud and happy!

Parents this is a great thing for kids to try. I think children like using pics more. I am gonna try this with my kids this year. It keeps them on track. I do not want to suggest any rewards for meeting a goal. A child should want to meet or exceed a goal just because. In real life we do not get rewards all the time because we do a good job.

I am still thinking about my goal map for 2012. I know one of my goals will include, "improving my hubs; the readership will follow and so will the money." I am going to start piano lessons this year. Am I too old to learn? Well it will be one of my goals. Good luck to all 2012!

Sample of a Simple Personal Goal Map

This my set-up. You can see it is really simple. Put a stick note inside the book with the dates you want to reach your goals. Check it and mark off your victories.

Mind Your Thoughts

Once you have glued your Goal map, keep it it where you will see it easily. Optional: Get the book The Secret and read it. Then place it next to your goal map. Ok, I said you do not need to spend money. Go to the library and when you are done reading the book, copy a few excerpts that you like and keep it by your computer. Look at your goal map in the morning and before you go to bed. Think positive! You must tell yourself and see yourself in the action of achieving your goal(s). It is an active thought, not a passive action. Visualize how HAPPY you are having achieved your goal(s).

Take that sticky note and write the date(s) your goal is to be achieved, then stick the note inside the book. Check off each date as each goal is achieved. Good Luck!
